Doddabetta is the highest point in the Nilgiri Hills. It is situated at an altitude of 2637 meters above sea level. This area has been announced by the Government as the reserve forest zone. It lies on the Ooty Kotagiri Road and is a photographic spot.

 

Doddabetta means big mountain in Kannada language. The area around Doddabetta is filled with rhododendron trees and sub-elphine shrubs and herbs. There is an observatory located at the top of the mountain having two telescopes. This was opened by the Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation on 18th June 1983. About 3500 people visit this place per day during season times.
