Purana Qila was built by Mughal Emperor Humayun in the year 1533 and it took him five years to complete. Later this was renamed as Shergarh. The walls of the fort are 18 meters high and 1.5 kilometers long. It has three gates, the Bara Darwaza, the Humayun Gate and the Talaqi Gate.

 

The excavated findings and the artifacts are placed at the Archaeological Museum at Purana Qila. Qila I Kuhna Mosque within this was built by Sher Shah in 1541. Sher Mandal is a double storied octagonal tower built of red sandstone. It was used by Sher Shah as the personal observatory. Light and sound show is conducted in Purana Qila daily.
