Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary is also called Vembanad Bird Sanctuary and is situated amidst the Kerala Backwaters along the banks of Vembanad Lake. This spot is the favorite place of the ornithologists and you can see wide varieties of migratory birds here. This sanctuary was formerly called Baker’s Estate and spreads over an area of more than 14 acres on the banks of River Kavanar.
Some of the local birds found here are waterfowl, cuckoo, owl, egret, heron, cormorant, darter, duck and Brahminy kite and the migratory birds that visit this place are Siberian crane, parrot, teal, lark and flycatcher. Early morning is the good time to watch the birds when they fly out of their nests over the lake.
