Amer Fort is one of the main tourist attractions in Jaipur and was built by Meenas king Raja Alan Singh Chanda. Later Kachhawa rajput occupied this fort. It was renovated by Raja Man Singh and then by Jai Singh I. It remained the capital of Sawai kings until it was shifted to Jaipur in 1727.

The Amer Fort is divided into four parts. It is located near the National Highway and has an entrance called Suraj Pol or the Sun Gate. The gate leads to Jaleb Chowk or first main courtyard. This served as the place where the soldiers assemble. It was built during the reign of Sawai Jai Singh. Sila Devi Temple and Ganesh Pol are located here.

Next to that is the second courtyard having the Diwan-i-A which is built on a raised platform. This is the place which the king used to meet the public and get petitions from them. The next structure is the third courtyard which is the private quarters of the kings and his families. This place could be reached through the Ganesh Pol. This is decorated with mosaics and sculptures. There are two buildings here and there is a garden in between them.

The building at the left is Jai Mandir which is decorated with glass panels and mirrored ceilings. The building opposite to this is Sukh Niwas and is also called Sukh Mahal. This means the hall of pleasure. There is a sandalwood door with marble works to enter this place. There is a pipe of water flowing through this to make the environment cool.

The structure called magic flower carved in marble is one of the attractions here. This is situated at the base of the pillars in the mirror palace. It has seven unique designs namely a fish tail, hooded cobra, lotus, elephant trunk, scorpion and corn incorporated in one.

The palace of Man Singh I is the oldest part of the fort. It was completed in 1599 and is the main palace here. It has a pillared pavilion and they are connected to small rooms having open balconies. There is a garden situated between the Jai Mandir and Sukh Niwas. There is Tripolia Gate which means three gate because it opens in three directions.

The fourth courtyard is the Zenana, the harem where the women of the royal family lived. This has many living rooms. The hall of private audience called Jas Mandir is located here and this is decorated with floral glass inlays.

The Amber Fort or Amer Fort is open from 9 A.M. to 4.30 P.M. and light and sound show is conducted during evenings.
