Hajo Travel Guide


The city of Hajo is located in the Kamrup district of the Indian state of Assam. This is important and known as the commercial hub of the Indian state. At the same time this is also a place that uniquely resembles the confluence of cultural groups of Assam. There are several places of worship in Hajo that belong to different religions like the Hindus, the Buddhists and the Muslims. Its location is beautiful graced by the Brahmaputra River and is also in close proximity to the city of Guwahati.

Among the temples of Hajo you can visit the famous Hayagriva Madhaba Temple that is well known for its long stairways which is made of stone. Also here is a pond that has a giant turtle which is here since the earliest known days of the temple itself. There is another temple of Kedareswara which is a well known Hindu temple. This is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is regularly visited by thousands of pilgrims and tourists every year.

There is a famous mosque that is known as the Poa-Mecca – one that has been built as the tomb of Pir Ghiyasuddin Auliya and is also attached with a mosque that was built by Shujauddin Mohammad Shah in the year 1657 AD. There are several other places of worship in the form of Hindu temples and Buddhist monasteries.

You can also enjoy short cruises that are conducted across the Brahmaputra River. They usually cover the destinations of the famous Kamakhya temple at Majuli and the Nilachal Hills. The journey extends for about 4 to 5 days and can be an experience to cherish.

There are several ways that you can arrive at Hajo. The nearest airport is at Guwahati and a regular bus service that ply from there to the place. The railway station is at Guwahati and from here you can travel to every corner of the country as well as other parts of the state. There is also a regular and active service of deluxe and regular bus services apart from rental cars and taxis that are also available. You can hire them and travel to different parts of the state and out of it as well. The presence of a beautiful and untouched landscape amidst green terrains makes the availability of transport restricted. But there is a presence of some form of alternative that will always be able to facilitate comfortable travel plans.

There are modest and affordable accommodation facilities available at Hajo. But if you would like to stay at more standard and even luxury hotels there is a wide range of choices that are available in Guwahati. A short journey by bus can help you to an accommodation option of your choice.
