Known widely as a “Temple City”, Guwahati the hub of the north east is located at the bank of the sprawling Brahmaputra River. It is the gateway of north east India and ranks as a top tourist destination in the incredible North East India. In the state of Assam it is the largest city stretching beside the river Brahmaputra. Guwahati derived its name from the fusion of two words “Guwa” implying betel nut and “hati” implying market. 


The graceful betel nut palm trees which jewels the borders of the land of Guwahati adds to the beauty of the landscape igniting a sense of spiritual harmony in the soul of the visitors. Within the boundary of this mesmerising land lies innumerable number of tourist spots. However, the myriad quaint Hindu temples form major attractions, and they come before you revealing pages and pages of history.


Following are some places of tourist attractions in Guwahati. Each has a unique trait in terms of beauty and hence, in their own way attracts the tourist at large. There is the Assam state museum, the famed Kamakhya Temple, Navagraha Temple, Srimanta Sankardeva Kalashetra, Sualkuchi, Chandubi Lake, Ugratara Temple, Vasistha Ashram, Sukreswar Temple, Assam State Zoo and Botanical Garden, Doul Govind Mandir and Umananda Temple.


The most famous and most frequented of all the tourist spot listed above is the Kamakhya Temple. Perched on the Nilachal Hill, 8 km west of the city, the temple is dedicated to Shakti. It is regarded as one of the biggest Shakti shrines in the country. Devotees from far and near visit this temple to offer their prayers. It is also an important pilgrimage site. Guwahati Temple also has a temple that is devoted to the nine planets. Known as the Navagraha Temple, the very name signifies it being a temple of the nine celestial bodies namely the sun, the moon, Mercury, Mars, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Dragon’s head and Dragon’s tail.


If you want to acquaint yourself in all profundity, with the cultural diversity of the land of Assam, then a visit to the Srimanta Sankardeva Kalashetra is a must. The exhibition of the impressive culture and tradition of Assam will leave you craving for more. Umananda Temple floating in the heart of the Brahmaputra River is also an excellent place to set your foot in while touring Guwahati. The temple is dedicated to Goddess Parvati. The Assam state museum is another important place of attraction. It is a treasure trove of various local handicrafts, sculptures and impressive antique. 


Easily accessible, Guwahati can be reached by means of railway, airways or road. It is well connected with all the major cities of the country. With so much to offer to the tourist spending a week or two will certainly be an action-packed experience.
