Fort St. George is also called White Town and was an ancient fortress founded by the English in 1644. The East India Company started its construction and completed on 23^rd April 1644. As this day was the Day of St. George, it was called Fort St George.

Fort St. George is serving as the administrative headquarters of the legislative assembly of Tamil Nadu. It has St. Mary’s Church, Wellesley House and a museum within its premises.
