What to Do in Bilaspur

 

The city of Bilaspur is located in the district of the same name in the Indian state of Chhattisgarh. The second largest city in the state this is a place that’s famous for its special weave of kosa silk and sarees that are made out of it. There is also the well known special cultivation of Doobraj rice that’s known for its aromatic flavors. There is also a rich and diverse culture for which the city is famous.

There are several temples and other places of interest that you will find within and around the city that will be of immense interest and attraction. Temples and places of worship are always a chief attraction among Indian cities and towns and this is also the same for Bilaspur. There are well known temples dedicated to Lord Shiva in Tala and Pali within close proximity to the city. There is a Ma Mahamaya temple at Mungeli and a similar temple also at Ratanpur. These are both well known among their devotees and visited in large numbers every year.

The dense forests of the region around Bilaspur have been turned into a region for a Achanakmar National Tiger Reserve park. A visit to this adventuresome place will get you close to varieties of animal species found here along with several types of plants and flowers. Commonly seen are the Indian bison, leopards, striped hyenas, chital, Indian four horned antelopes, sambar deers and the sloth bear among many others. There is also a wide range of birds that can be seen here.

Bilaspur is also a place for caves and its historic significance. There are plenty of such exquisite works of art seen in the Udaipur caves. There are the Vyas caves at a distance of 10 kilometers from the city and the Markandeya Caves at 40 kilometers. There are several forts too that can make for an interesting travel itinerary when you are in Bilaspur. Though there are many small to big forts in the region the most famous among these are the Bahadurpur Fort, Tiun Fort and the Sarium Fort.

The city is also flanked by the Son River, the Narmada River both of which originates from the Amarkantak River. Bilaspur is also the city that has several dams to its credit – Kutaghat Dam and the Bango Dam. There are others too that are located in different regions around the city.

The best time to visit the city would be the months between July and September.
