Sanchi is a small village near Bhopal which is noted for its stupa. This is one of the important pilgrimage centers of Buddhists. The Great Stupa was built during the time of the emperor Ashoka and it is the oldest stone structure in India. It has four ornamental gateways that encircle the whole structure. Other stupas and structures were built later in 12^th century and has flat roofed square sanctum with four pillars and portico.
