Bharatpur Travel Guide

A small town in the Rajasthan state of India, Bharatpur is acknowledged as the Eastern Gateway to Rajasthan. Though it has not the splendour and architectural grandeur of the other state of Rajasthan, yet Bharatpur is renowned for its wildlife bird sanctuary. It lies at a distance of 55 km from Agra and welcomes a considerable number of tourists every year. Bharatpur derived its name after Bharat, who was the brother of Lord Rama

It is significant for the Keoladeo Ghana Bird Sanctuary which houses more than three hundred and seventy seven species of birds. Even unusual migratory birds from Central Asia, Tibet, Afghanistan and Siberian are seen swarming the sanctuary. The sanctuary sprawls over an area of 29 sq km and for the bird lovers it is just the perfect paradise in the true sense of the term.  It was designated as a National park in the year 1981 and today it occupies one of the topmost positions in the list of the world’s best bird sanctuaries.

While on your tour of the sanctuary you can spot such birds as the Egrets, coots, kingfishers, ducks, Sarus crane, laggar falcon, marsh harrier, Pallas’ eagle, storks, greater spotted eagle, spoonbills and if you are lucky you can also spot the rare Siberian Crane.

However, tourist attractions in Bharatpur are not confined to this bird sanctuary only. There are other places worthy of a stopover and they include the Lohagarh Fort residence of the Jat chieftain, Jawahar Burj, the Begam Smaru, Raja Surajmal and Fateh Burj. The majestic city of Bharatpur is blessed with some exquisite forts, temples, palaces, museums, shimmering lakes. The city comes alive during the various fairs and festivals that it hosts and visiting the place at such a time will surely be an engrossing experience.

Bharatpur is well connected to all other cities of the country either through rail, air or through road. There are railways that connect Bharatpur with Delhi, Ahmadabad, Jaipur Mumbai and many other major cities of India. The nearest airport is Agra.

Though there are not many tourist attractions in Bharatpur, the wildlife sanctuary is what draws the maximum number of tourists every year. Indeed it is a great place for nature and bird lovers and in the lap of this nature you will surely want to spend hours and hours.
