Swaraj Bhavan is the ancestral residence of the Nehru-Gandhi family and was owned by Motital Nehru in 19^th century. The former Prime Minister of Indira Gandhi was born at this place. It is now under the maintenance of Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Fund. When Motilal Nehru bought this house in 1900, it was in ruins and he renovated it and decorated it to his taste.

The building was donated to the nation in 1970 by Indira Gandhi and then it was turned into a museum. It houses the books and other memorabilia of Motilal Nehru and Jawaharlal Nehru. It is one of the best museums of India at present. The light and sound program is also conducted here four times a day.
