This national museum was constructed in 1622 by the Mughal prince Khuram who became the emperor Shah Jahan later. In the year 1878 Rabindranath Tagore stayed here at his young age. And after Indian independence, this place was converted into Raj Bhavan, the residence of the Governor of Gujarat and a memorial for Sardar Vallabhai Patel was founded here on 7th March 1980.

There is a museum in it that houses the pictures and biographical descriptions and news paper clippings about Sardar Patel and there are also relics of his life. The room in the first floor was dedicated to Tagore and has a large statue of him.
