Agra Fort is a UNESCO World Heritage Site which is situated about two and half kilometers from Taj Mahal. It is also called Lal Qila, Fort Rouge and Qila i Akbari. It spreads over an area of 94 acres of land and has four gates on four sides. They are Delhi Gate, Lahore Gate, Khizri gate and Akbar Gate.

The public are allowed to enter only through Lahore Gate which is also called Amar Singh Gate. A part of Agra Fort is used by the Indian military and so the common people cannot access all the areas of the fort. Akbar Gate is the grandest of all with white marble inlays proving the richness and power of the Mughals. There is an elephant gate inside with two life sized stone elephant with riders on either side.

The Hindu Sikarwar Rajputs owned this fort before it was captured by Sikandar Lodi who held sway from 1488 to 1517. Agra served as the capital for many years and when the son of Sikandar Lodi was defeated by Babar in the battle of Panipat, the fort went into the hands of the Mughals. Agra Fort housed the famous diamond Kohinoor.

The baoli in the fort was built by Babur and Humayun was crowned the king in 1530 in this place. Mughal Emperor Akbar ruled from here and he rebuilt the fort with red sandstone and the work continued for eight years and completed in 1573.

Agra Fort contains various structures within it such as Anguri Bagh, Diwan-i-Am, Diwan-i-Khas, Golden Pavilions, Jahangiri Mahal, Khas Mahal, Macchi Bhawan, Mina Masjid, Moti Masjid, Musamman Burj, Takht-i-Jahangir, Nagina Masjid, Naubat Khana, Rang Mahal, Shahi Burj, Shah Jahani Mahal, Sheesh Mahal and Zenana Mina Bazaar.
