  • Musical Fountain in Brindavan Garden

    Comment

The garden is maintained by the Cauvery Niravari Nigama (Cauvery Irrigation Department), a Government of Karnataka enterprise. It is spread across an area of 60 acres (240,000 m2). Adjoining it is also a fruit orchard spread across 75 acres (300,000 m2) and 2 horticultural farms, Nagavana (30 acres) and Chandravana (5 acres).[6] The garden is laid out in 3 terraces which contain water fountains, Ficus trees, foliage plants such as Duranta plumaria and Euphorbia and flowering plants like Celosia, Marigold and bougainvillea. The garden is open to general public and an entry-fee is charged. The garden also has topiary works (sculptures of animals created by clipping shrubs), pergolas (shaded passageway covered by creepers) and gazebos. The main attraction of the park is the musical fountain in which bursts of water are synchronised to the music of songs. There is also a lake within the garden with boating facilities available for visitors. The garden was renovated in 2005 with a cost of Rs. 5 crore. The renovation included sprucing up the musical fountain using a digitised system and repairs of dysfunctional fountains. In 2007, the Gardens were closed for a brief duration as a safety measure to avoid trouble related to the Kaveri water dispute.

  • Tiger walking cautiously on the wall in Mysore Zoo

    Comment

Tipu's Tiger or Tippoo's Tiger is an 18th century automaton or mechanical toy created for Tipu Sultan, the ruler of the Kingdom of Mysore in India. The carved and painted wood casing represents a tiger savaging a near life-size European man. Mechanisms inside the tiger and man's bodies make one hand of the man move, emit a wailing sound from his mouth and grunts from the tiger. In addition a flap on the side of the tiger folds down to reveal the keyboard of a small pipe organ with 18 notes. The tiger was created for Tipu and makes use of his personal emblem of the tiger and expresses his hatred of his enemy, the British of the East India Company. The tiger was discovered in his summer palace after East India Company troops stormed Tipu's capital in 1799. The Governor General, Lord Mornington sent the Tiger to Britain initially intending it to be an exhibit in the Tower of London. First exhibited to the London public in 1808 in East India House, then the offices of the East India Company in London, it was later transferred to the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) in 1880 (accession number 2545(IS)). It now forms part of the permanent exhibit on the "Imperial courts of South India". From the moment it arrived in London to the present day, Tipu's Tiger has been a popular attraction to the public.

  • Man made Tents at Agumbe

    Comment

A tent is a shelter consisting of sheets of fabric or other material draped over, attached to a frame of poles or attached to a supporting rope. While smaller tents may be free-standing or attached to the ground, large tents are usually anchored using guy ropes tied to stakes or tent pegs. First used as portable homes by nomadic peoples, tents are now more often used for recreational camping and temporary shelters. Tents range in size from "bivouac" structures, just big enough for one person to sleep in up to huge circus tents capable of seating thousands of people. The bulk of this article is concerned with tents used for recreational camping which have sleeping space for one to ten people. Larger tents are discussed in a separate section below. Tents for recreational camping fall into two categories. Tents intended to be carried by backpackers are the smallest and lightest type. Smaller tents may be sufficiently light that they can be carried for long distances on a touring bicycle, a boat, or when backpacking. The military organizations of most nations use such tents to temporarily house troops living and working under field conditions. The second type are larger, heavier tents which are usually carried in a car or other vehicle. Depending on tent size and the experience of the person or people involved, such tents can usually be assembled (pitched) in between 5 and 25 minutes; disassembly (striking) takes a similar length of time. Some very specialised tents have spring-loaded poles and can be 'pitched' in seconds, but take somewhat longer to strike.

  • Uphill drive on Yelagiri Mountain

    Comment

Yelagiri or Elagiri is a small hill station located in between the towns of Vaniyambadi and Jolarpettai (Tamil Nadu, India). The hill station dates back to the British colonial days. The Whole of Yelagiri was once the private property of the Elagiri Zamindar Family. It was taken over by the government of India during the Early 1950's.The house of the Elagiri Zamindars still exists in Reddiyur. The Yelagiri hill station is not as developed as the other hill stations in Tamil Nadu like Ooty or Kodaikanal. However, the district administration has now taken up the task of developing Yelagiri Hills into a tourist destination by promoting the adventure sports such as paragliding and rock climbing. The roadway to Yelagiri is finely constructed and well punctuated with the milestones and signboards all way through. Petrol pumps are sufficient enough which makes traveling convenient and easy. Yelagiri is one of the famous places for trekkers in India. The hill station is located at a height of 1048 meters above sea level. Yelagiri comprises 14 hamlets and a number of temples spread over a couple of hills. The highest point in Yelgiri is the Swamimalai Hill, standing tall at 4,338 ft; Swamimalai is a popular destination for trekkers. The view from the summit is spectacular. The hill provides a good number of trekking trails through thick reserved forests. Mangalam, a small village, is at the base of this hill. There are other trekking options that include smaller peaks like Javadi Hills, Palamathi Hills.

  • Giant Wheel at Wonderla, Bangalore

    Comment

Giant Wheel was a double Ferris wheel ride that operated at Hersheypark between 1973 and 2004. It was built by Intamin, who also built several other rides for Hersheypark, including Storm Runner and Canyon River Rapids. The ride was sponsored by Giant Food Stores in its last two years of operation. The Giant Wheel resembled two giant arms joined at a central hub, with a grossly-oversized hand (with twelve "fingers") extending from the end of each arm. From the "fingertips" of the fingers dangled circular cabins, on to which up to eight people could be loaded at a time. One "arm" would rise approximately one hundred feet as the "hand" would spin in a clockwise motion on a wheel up to the 125-foot and down to the 75-foot level. The cabin could also be spun in the horizontal plane using a central steering wheel, similar to a "teacup" ride. After being up in the air for several minutes, and after the other "hand" (located at the other end of the 116-foot cross arm) was loaded, the first "hand" declined back to the ground while the other rose in the air. When shut down, the ride's "arms" would rest at equipoise, both "hands" dangling 40-to-50 feet off the ground. The Giant Wheel could handle large crowds, and had a capacity of 2,000 persons per hour. The weight of the entire structure was over 135 tons, installed in a 25-feet square slab of concrete, 10 feet thick.[1] The original plan to build an 11th roller coaster, named Turbulence, was cancelled, and in 2005, Balloon Flight and Starship America were built on its original site. The Giant Wheel never operated during Christmas Candylane. Instead, rides from other areas of the park were brought in and placed under it, including the Mini Train, Dinosaurs-Go-Round, and Mini-Pirate. A star of Bethlehem light sculpture was placed on the top of one of the arms. It has since moved to the Sidewinder.

  • Awesome view of Crows during Flower Show

    Comment

Crows form the genus Corvus in the family Corvidae. Ranging in size from the relatively small pigeon-size jackdaws (Eurasian and Daurian) to the Common Raven of the Holarctic region and Thick-billed Raven of the highlands of Ethiopia, the 40 or so members of this genus occur on all temperate continents (except South America) and several offshore and oceanic islands (except for a few, which included Hawaii, which had the Hawaiian crow that went extinct in the wild in 2002). In the United States and Canada, the word "crow" is used to refer to the American Crow, Corvus brachyrhynchos. The crow genus makes up a third of the species in the Corvidae family. Other corvids include rooks and jays. Crows appear to have evolved in Asia from the corvid stock, which had evolved in Australia. A group of crows is called a flock or a murder,[1] because the group will sometimes kill a dying crow.[2] Recent research has found some crow species capable not only of tool use but of tool construction as well.[3] Crows are now considered to be among the world's most intelligent animals.[4] The Jackdaw and (along with its fellow corvid, the European Magpie) has been found to have a neostriatum approximately the same relative size as is found in chimpanzees and humans, and significantly larger than is found in the gibbon

  • Idol of Kabaleeshwarar in Mylapore Temple

    Comment

Legend has it that Goddess Parvathi, the divine consort of Lord Shiva, did penance at Mylapore taking the form of a pea-hen, in order to be wedded to him. The name Mylapore is derived from this legend - "Mayil" in Tamil means a peacock. The famous Kapaleeswarar temple in Mylapore and its beautiful temple tank are associated with this legend. The renowned geographer Ptolemy had described about in his writings about the Mylapore and the famous Kapaleeshwarar temple[citation needed]. The temple boasts of exquisitive architecture and one of the most celebrated shrine of Lord Shiva and goddess Parvati. The Kapaleeshwarar temple is one of the most important temples in the world. The temple has statues of all the Gods and Goddesses of the Hindu Religion. Built in the 9th century this temple stands as one of the most foremost temples of South India and remains a testimonial to the greatness and unflinching devotion of the Pallava kings. The temple has other shrines dedicated to Ganesha (a dancing form called Nardana Vinayakar), Muruga (called Singara Velar), with his two consorts Valli and Devayani. Smaller shrines are dedicated to other forms of Shiva (Annamalaiar, Sundareswarar and Jagatheswarar), Muruga (Palani Andavar) and others. In particular, there is a shrine with an image of a peahen, which is where Mylapore derives its name from. Navagraha shrine is also present. There is a separate shrine for Sani Bhagavan and special puja's will be done on Saturday. The present Kapaleeswarar temple was built 300–400 years ago at a different location

  • Paper kites for Kids at temple Festival, Mylapore

    Comment

A kite is a tethered aircraft. The necessary lift that makes the kite wing fly is generated when air (or in some cases water)flows over and under the kite's wing, producing low pressure above the wing and high pressure below it. This deflection also generates horizontal drag along the direction of the wind. The resultant force vector from the lift and drag force components is opposed by the tension of the one or more lines or tethers.[5] The anchor point of the kite line may be static or moving (e.g., the towing of a kite by a running person, boat, free-falling anchors as in paragliders and fugitive parakites or vehicle). Kites are usually heavier-than-air, but there is a second category of lighter-than-air kite called a kytoon which may be filled with hydrogen, hot air, methane, or helium; these stay aloft with or without wind; at calm they float; at wind they receive lift from buoyancy and aerodynamic lift. Kytoons have been made in toy-scale as well as military large scale.[10] Kites may be flown for recreation, art or other practical uses. Sport kites can be flown in aerial ballet, sometimes as part of a competition. Power kites are multi-line steerable kites designed to generate large forces which can be used to power activities such as kite surfing, kite landboarding, kite fishing, kite buggying and a new trend snow kiting. Kites towed behind boats can lift passengers which has had useful military applications in the past.
