Zeeshan Ali Biography

Zeeshan Ali is a former tennis player from Bangalore who played during the period late 1980s- early 1990s. He represented India at 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, and reached till round 2. His highest singles ATP-ranking was at number 126, on 12 December 1988 during his career peak. He remained almost within the top 150 through August 1989. As a junior he reached till position 2, the top rank among Asians. He was initially trained by his father, Akhtar Ali who has been a Davis Cup tennis player. Ali showed glimpses of achievements at a very young age. He won the Bengal Men's State championship when he was only 13. Interestingly he beat his father in the finals to cling the title. He is an Asian Game Gold Medalist.

 

He was born in Kolkata in 1970. A 5-time National champion, this right hand player won the title for the first time when he was only 16 and remained India’s top player in the 1980s for many years. Zeeshan has been one of the leading junior players of his time and reached till position 2. He won Asian Junior championship in 1986. Wimbledon Junior Singles Semi-finals in 1986 and the US Open Junior Doubles Finals in 1987 are his other outstanding contributions as a junior tennis player. In 1986, he was ranked 2. Very soon he joined senior team and was one of the most aggressive players during 1988-1989 and reached his career peak also.

 

In 1990, he won a Challenger doubles title in Winnetkaand reached another Challenger doubles final in Kenya. He retired for tennis in 1995 and moved to Dubai, where he started a new innings. He set up his own tennis academy in Dubai and has also been selected to be the National Tennis Coach of the UAE Davis Cup team.
