Yeshe Dorjee Thongchi Biography

Yeshe Dorjee Thongchi is an Indian writer from Arunachal Pradesh, who retired as deputy commissioner. He won Sahitya Akademi Award 2005 for Assamese novel Mauna Outh Mukhar Hriday. Phulchand Khandelwal Sanghati Bata award, The Bhasha Bharti Award, Basudev Jalan Award and Bhupen Hazarika Award 2017 are the major awards received by him. He owns many novels, short story collections and folk tales to his credit. Mauna Outh Mukhar Hriday, Janahamudrat akalshare Ejoni adibahi, Lingjhik, Bih Kanyar deshat, Hawa kata Manuh, Mishing and Moi Akou janam lom are among his published works. He wrote many plays during his teens, which were staged also.

Yeshe Dorjee Thongchi was born on 13 June 1952 in West Kameng, Arunachal Pradesh. Tashi Phuntsu Thongschi and Rinchin Chojom Thongsi were his parents. He started writing since school days. He speaks in Sherdukpen dialect, yet he started writing in Assamese, as he studied in Assamese medium school. He published his first poem Jonbai in a children’s magazine in 1967. Lare he continued writing and published a few patriotic poems in a few journals and magazines. His teachers, fellow students and friends appreciated his skills and it encouraged him to write more.

Thongchi wrote several such one act plays and staged at several places. He also wrote a play which represented his state at National Dramatic Festival held at Bangalore. His works had a unique background of his writings, which helped him to gain immense popularity in a short period, at a young age. He joined Civil Services in 1977 as a Civil Service Officer, and was inducted to Indian Administrative Service in 1992. He retired as deputy commissioner. Papor pukhuri, Bah Fular Gundh and Anya Ekhan pratiyugita are his short story collections.
