Yengkhom Roma Biography

Yengkhom Roma is a Manipuri film actress who was most active in the classic era of 1970s, playing lead and supporting roles. She also acted in Maiteli movies and is an established name in this industry. She is the first heroine of the first Maiteli film. She has been a part of more than 100 radio plays before she became a part of film industry in the 1950s. She has won accolades for her acting skills in Manipuri theatre and cinema. She received Best actress award in the First Manipur Film Festival held in 1984, Best supporting actress in the All Manipur Drama Festival 1966-67, Best actress in the All Manipur Drama Festival 1967-68, Special Award in the Akashvani Annual Award 1980 and many more honours.

 

Yengkhom Roma was born on 23 September 1945 in Imphal, Manipur. She completed her matriculation from Tamphasana School in 1966. She also completed her graduation in year 1970. Since high school days she actively participated in cultural activities and stage dramas and won many competitions too. During her school days she was spotted by Laishram Somarendra to play Kush in the play, Luv Kush. She started with theatre, also did more than a hundred radio plays and moved to film industry. She was active in theatre in 1960s and joined film industry in 1970s.

 

She marked her film debut with first Meitei film Matamgi Manipur in 1972. She played lead role in this film. Throughout 1970s she remained a top and popular actress. Lamja Parshuram, Olangthagee Wangmadasoo, Paokhum Ama etc are some of her movies during her early years. With 1980s, she directed many plays too. She won Best director in the All Manipur Drama Services Inter Competition 1984 and 1990.
