Yakub Khan Mehboob Khan Biography

Yakub Khan Mehboob Khan, shortly called Yakub was an Indian star of yesterdays known for both comic and villain roles. He was equally successful as a character artist, villain and comedian and has acted in over 300 films in a career spanning to about 30 years. He died of heart attack in 1958 aged 54. He was last seen in the hit movies - Ab Dilli Dur Nahin, Adalat, Paying guest etc. He played the role of angry son in Aurat (1940), the role reprised by Guru Dutt in the movie Mother India when it was remade by the same director once again. Alongside Prithviraj Kapoor and Chandra Mohan, he was the most paid Bollywood actor of Black & White era of Bollywood.

 

Yakub Khan Mehboob Khan was born in the year 1904 in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh. He ran away from home at a very young age and did odd jobs to earn a living. Later he joined the ship ‘S. S. Madura’ as a kitchen worker and got opportunity to travel across the world. In those days he got opportunity to watch Hollywood movies and got attracted to films. He briefly worked as a tourist guide in Kolkata before reaching Mumbai in 1924 and joined the Sharda Film Company. The silent film – Bajirao Mastani was his debut movie of the same production company. Meri Jaan (1931) with Sagar Movietone was his first talkie where he got the opportunity to play the title role of Prince.

 

Mehboob Khan's Aurat (1940) proved to be the breakthrough movie of his career, where he played the negative role of son. Very soon he became a popular actor of Bollywood with some movies like Hulchul, Sagai (1951), Patanga (1949), Beqasoor etc. Regarded as one of the best comedians of his times, and acknowledged masters of comedy alongside Johnny Walker, Gope and Agha, they have together worked in many movies. In the book, Genres of Indian Cinema, it’s referred that real talents of these actors were not used in Bollywood. The triumvirate of Dilip Kumar, Dev Anand and Raj Kapoor has always been compared to the trio - Chandra Mohan, Yakub and Shyam. Sagar Ka Sher, and Uski Tamanna are his directorial ventures.
