Yaar Kannan Biography

Yaar Kannan is a noted screenwriter and director associated with Tamil cinema since early 1980s. He has also done a few character roles on screen. Kannan made his debut as a film maker through the movie, Yaar? in 1985. The horror film which marked the acting debut of actor Arjun was a commercial success as well and Kannan added the tag ‘Yaar’ to his name after that. Currently he portrays character roles on film screen since 2010s and appeared in Prabhu Solomon’s movies like Kumki. Known for his successful association with Ramarajan, he has directed movies like Namma Ooru Nayagan (1988), Anbu Kattalai (1989) and Kaavalan (1990).

Kannan started his film career in the 1980s. Yaar? in 1985 marked his directorial debut and was a commercial success. His association with Ramarajan began with his second film - Namma Ooru Nayagan (1988), which also starred Gouthami and Sripriya in lead roles. The film with musical score by Rajesh Khanna was a hit and since then he regularly worked with Ramarajan in many movies later. For the 1989 movie Anbu Kattalai, Ramarajan was paired with Pallavi while Ramarajan played a cop role in 1990 film – Kovalan. After the failure of 1994 film Magudikkaran, he took a break from the industry and got associated with television for a short while.

In 2006, he made a comeback with the directorial venture – Yuga, starring Richard Rishi, Swarnamalya and Manikandan in lead roles. The sci-fi thriller, inspired by movies like Alien received mixed response from critics and audience. His last release as a director was Pournami Nagam, Tamil remake of Punnami Naagu featuring Mumaith Khan, which again met with a commercial failure. But Mumaith’s dance steps were well appreciated. A couple of movies got shelved and he started a new beginning as an actor. Purampokku Engira Podhuvudamai, Kayal, Kumki, Varuthapadatha Valibar Sangam and Pazhani are his releases.
