Y. V. Chandrachud Biography

Yeshwant Vishnu Chandrachud, better known as Y. V. Chandrachud was the 16th Chief Justice of India (1978-1985). He is the longest-serving Chief Justice in India's history of administration where he served 7 years and 4 months. Prior to being appointed as Chief Justice of India, he served as Judge to the Supreme Court of India since 1972. He was nicknamed as ‘Iron hands’. During his tenure as Chief Justice, he sent Sanjay Gandhi to jail in the "Kissa Kursi Ka" case, when the original print of the movie was destroyed by Gandhi. The famous Habeas Corpus case (A.D.M. Jabalpur vs. Shukla) during Emergency Period was also heard during his tenure in Supreme Court. His son Dhananjaya Y. Chandrachud is a current judge of Supreme Court of India.

 

Yeshwant Vishnu Chandrachud was born in Pune of present-day Maharashtra state on 12 July 1920. He completed his schooling from Nutan Marathi Vidyalaya high school, and graduation from Elphinstone College. He completed his law studies from the ILS Law College, Pune. He was married to Prabha, and the couple had one son and one daughter. Their son, Dhananjaya Y. Chandrachud who currently serves as the judge of Supreme Court of India, is in line to become Chief Justice of India in 2022. His grandson Chintan Chandrachud is a legal scholar and writer.

 

He was first appointed Judge to the Supreme Court of India on 28 August 1972. He was appointed during the term of the Janata government. "Kissa Kursi Ka" case was one among the cases known for. The Habeas Corpus case, Minerva Mills Case and The Shah Bano case were other major judgments during his tenure. He passed away in 2008.
