Woorkeri Raman Biography

Woorkeri Raman is a former Indian cricketer from Chennai, Tamil Nadu. He played domestic cricket for Tamil Nadu, and has played 11 tests and 27 ODI matches for India. He was a left-handed batsman for his team, who occasionally bowls as well. Raman currently serves as a cricket coach. Associated with international cricket matches since 1988, he played till 1996 for Indian team. He scored 448 runs from 11 tests and 617 runs from 27 matches. 114 is his highest score in ODI. He scored 4 50’s and 3 50’s in his international cricket career. 96 is his highest score in test cricket. He currently serves as the batting coach of Kolkata Knight Riders.

 

He was born in Chennai on May 23, 1965. His full name is Woorkeri Venkat Raman. He started off playing domestic cricket for Tamil Nadu before he made his international debut in 1988. Raman began his first class career as a left arm spinner. But later he switched on to batting and eventually became successful. He holds an outstanding record in domestic cricket which includes three triple centuries. However his international cricket career was not glorious.

 

After mid-1980s, he witnessed the glorious period of his career which gave him selection to Indian team. He scored 313 against Goa in the Ranji Trophy in 1988–89. He scored 1018 runs in the season which broke several batting records. He was associated with Ranji team till 1999. After retirement he had a successful career as a cricket coach. Apart from Tamil Nadu and Bengal domestic teams, he has also coached IPL teams. Apart from coaching Bengal Ranji team, he is also the batting coach of Kolkata Knight Riders.
