Vivan Sundaram Biography

Vivan Sundaram is an Indian contemporary artist who has worked on painting, installation, assemblage, photography, digital media and film in his extensive art career. He is married to noted art critic and writer, Geeta Kapur. He is the son of noted artist Kalyan Sundaram who served as the Chairman of Law Commission of India from 1968 to 1971, and the nephew of noted contemporary artist and painter, Amrita Sher-Gil. His mother Indira Sher-Gil is the sister of Amrita Sher-Gil. Vivan’s works are linked with social and political history, the environment and historiography. His works mostly include paintings and craft work.

 

An intellectual artist, Vivan studied in The Doon School, MS University in Baroda and later at the Slade School of London. While at London he got opportunity to train under noted British-American painter R. B. Kitaj. Later he started working on painting, sculpture, printmaking, photography, installation and video art, belonging to contemporary art. He is active in the field since 1970s. He gave emphasis to figurative representations in the 1980s. He was the one of the first Indian artists to work with installation.

 

The Heights of Macchu Picchu, The Discrete Charm of the Bourgeosie and The Indian Emergency are his noted works in the early 1970s which highlighted his political anxiety. In those days he was actively involved with the student movement, and worked with activists. ‘Gagawaka: Making Strange’, Chemould Prescott Road, Mumbai and ‘Trash’, Walsh Gallery, Chicago are his recent exhibitions. He uses his art as a tool for freedom of expression and promoting democratic rights. This writer is known for choosing unconventional objects for his creations.
