Viren J. Shah Biography

Viren J. Shah was an Indian politician, who has served as a parliamentarian thrice and also governor of West Bengal. He was associated with Bharatiya Janata Party, and has served as treasurer to the party. He was a member of Rajya Sabha twice during 1975 -1981 and 1990-1996, and also served as Lok Sabha member from 1967 to 1970. He was also a former chairman of Mukand Steel, founded by his father. He passed away on 9 March 2013, aged 86.

 

Viren J. Shah was born on 12 May 1926 into a middle-class family at Chittpore Road, Kolkata. Jeewanlal Motichand Shah and Jayaben were his parents. His father was a noted Gandhian and an industrialist, who was co-founder of Mukund Limited, a steel company based in Mumbai now. His father moved to Kolkata in the early 1900 to do his business, and Viren was born there. This company was originally set up by a person named Lala Mukandlal of Lahore, a follower of Mahatma Gandhi. When he was in high need for liquid money Gandhiji persuaded Jeewanlal and Jamnalal to take over the company and run it in order to protect the livelihood of its employees. Years later Viren served as its chairman.

 

In his company, he started off as an unpaid apprentice in 1944 in Lahore. He was at Lahore when Partition happened, and it also gave him enough experiences to know the relationship between business and politics, and how powerful both are, in terms of money. He was fully engaged in his career as an industrialist in the 1950s and 1960s. He served as the Managing Director of the company from 1968 and Chairman & Managing Director from 1972.  Since 1960s, he started involving with politics.
