Virbhadra Singh Biography

Virbhadra Singh is the present chief minister of Himachal Pradesh. He has been serving the term since 2012. He has previously held the same position three times - 1983 to 1990, from 1993 to 1998, and from 2003 to 2007 and a member of Indian National Congress. He has been elected to Lok Sabha during the years, 1962, 1967, 1972, 1980 and in 2009. His wife Pratibha Singh is also an active politician of Indian National Congress and is member of Lok Sabha from Mandi.


Virbhadra Singh was born on 23 June 1934 in Sarahan, Shimla as the son of Padam Singh. His schooling was done at Bishop Cotton School in Shimla. He graduated from St. Stephen's College, Delhi. He married Pratibha Singh in 1985 and the couple has 5 children. Singh gained a seat in the Lok Sabha for the first time during the Indian general elections of 1962, followed by 1967 and 1971. Later he got elected during the general elections of 1980 and 2009. His wife became a part of his active political life and she won for the first time in 2004 elections. Singh was a member of the Indian Delegation to the General Assembly of the United Nations in 1976.


Singh was Minister of State for Industries between 1980 and 1983. Singh held the national office of Deputy Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation in central cabinet during the period, 1976-1977. He held the cabinet post of Minister for Steel during the period 2009-2011 followed by the cabinet minister with responsibility for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises. He resigned the position in June 2012 to become the chief minister of the state. Singh has also been elected 7 times to the Himachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly during the terms – 1983, 1985, 1990, 1993, 1998 and 2003.
