Vir Bahadur Singh Biography

Vir Bahadur Singh was a politician who served as the 14th Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, during 24 September 1985 - 24 June 1988, preceeded and succeeded by N. D. Tiwari, one of the prominent politicians from UP in the post-independent era. He was associated with Indian National Congress during his political career. In most cases, no CM has been able to complete 5 year term in UP’s government except UP’s youngest CM Akhilesh Yadav, and Singh too was not a case of exception. In 17 state governments formed till now after the formation of the state, only Akhilesh Yadav from Samajwadi Party has managed to complete a term of 5 years without any break, and it happened in 2012 after 33 sworn in ceremonies happened.

He was born on 18 January 1935 in Gorakhpur, United Provinces, British India. His birth place place now belongs to Uttar Pradesh. Vir Bahadur Singh, as a child has participated in Quit India Movement. He belonged to a Thakur family. As a politician associated with state politics, he rose to prominence in the early 1980s. He was appointed as Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh on 24 September 1985, and served a term of almost three years. He was then appointed Union Minister of Communication in 1988, by Rajiv Gandhi. In his political career, he closely worked with the politicians, Om Prakash Pandey & Brij Bhushan Singh in the 1980s.

Many educational institutions of Gorakhpur have been named after him. They include - Vir Bahadur singh Gorakhpur Planetarium, Vir Bahadur Singh Sports College and Vir Bahadur Singh Degree College, all belonging to Gorakhpur, and also Vir Bahadur Singh Purvanchal University is named after him. He passed away in Paris on 30 May 1989, aged only 55. His death reason is still unknown.
