Vinoo Mankad Biography

Vinoo Mankad was an Indian cricketer and his original name was Mulvantrai Himmatlal Mankad. He was an effective batsman and had played in 44 Test matches and has scored 2109 runs with five centuries in Test match. His top score was 231. He had taken 162 wickets totally.

 

He was born on 12th April 1917 in Jamnagar in India and his nickname was Vinoo. He showed his best performance in 1952 against England at Lord’s stadium. In the first innings of this game, his score was 72 and he bowled 73 overs taking 5 wickets for 196 runs. In the second innings he scored 184 runs and the total score of Indian team was 378. Though India lost the series, he showed remarkable performance. He was the first player to score a century and take 5 wickets in the same Test match in a span of over 30 years. He became the first proud Indian to achieve this.

 

He played a significant role in the match against England in the year 1952 held at Chennai. He took 8 wickets giving 52 runs in the first innings and took 4 wickets giving 53 runs in the second and this helped Indian team to taste its first victory in the Test match against England.

 

He got 231 against New Zealand in 1956 in the match held at Chennai and his opening partnership with Pankaj Roy could get the highest which was 413 runs in the time of 52 years. This record was broken by Sunil Gavaskar in 1983.

 

He was not out of controversy. He broke the wicket at the non-strikers end when he ran when the batsman at the other end was out of his ground. This type of run out is called as Mankading by his name. His last Test was against West Indies on 11th February 1959. He died on 21st August 1978.
