Vinod Joshi Biography

Vinod Joshi is a well-known and reputed Gujarati poet, writer and literary critic from Amreli, Gujarat. His poetry works belong to postmodern category. Parantu, a collection of Geets published in 1984, Shikhandi, a poem on a character from the Mahabharata, Tundil-tundika, Radio Natak: Swarup ane Siddhant, Zalar Vage Zoothadi etc are his major works. In 2018 he has been honoured with multiple awards - Narsinh Mehta Award and Kalapi Award, and has previously received Kavishwar Dalpatram Award (2013), Sahitya Gaurav Puraskar (2015) and many more. Joshi is a professor by profession.

Vinod Joshi was born on 13 August 1955 in Bhoringda, Amreli district, Gujarat. Hargovinddas Joshi and Lilavati Joshi are his parents. His father was a Sanskrit scholar. He was deeply influenced by the folklore told by his mother during childhood days. He married Vimal Joshi in 1981. His schooling was done at Gadhada, followed by Turkha and Surendranagar. Joshi completed his Bachelor of Arts in Gujarati literature from Botad in 1975. He completed his Master of Arts from Bhavnagar. He also took PhD in 1980 using his research thesis Radio Nataknu Kalaswaroop Ane Gujaratima Teno Vikas.

After completing his Master’s degree in 1977, he started his professional career as a Professor of Gujarati literature at the H.L. Patel Arts and Commerce College in Bhayavadar. The next year he joined Kapadia Mahila Arts College, Bhavnagar, followed by Maharaja Krishnakumarsinhji Bhavnagar University in 1988, where he worked till 2017 completing almost three decades. As a writer feminist thoughts and rural life reflected in his works. Sonnet (1984), Abhipret (1986), Amrut Ghayal: Vyaktimatta ane Vangmay (1988), Udgreev (1995), Nivesh (1995) and Radio Natak: Swaroop ane Siddhant (1986) are his works on literary criticism.
