Vinay Chandra Maudgalya Biography

Vinay Chandra Maudgalya was a famous Hindustani vocalist, who established the art institute Gandharva Mahavidyalaya in Delhi in 1939. Maudgalya made a whole generation of men and women realise the value of their cultural heritage, and he was a great teacher during his lifetime. One of his main disciples is famous singer Subha Mudgal who became his daughter-in-law by marrying his son and famous jurist, Mukul Mudgal; but they got separated. Among Vinay’s other children, his daughter Madhavi Mudgal became a famous Odissi dancer while his son Madhup Mudgal is a musician, who currently serves as the head of Gandharva Mahavidyalaya started by him, following his legacy. His family has three Padma Shri recipients - Madhup Mudgal, Madhavi Mudgal and Vinay Chandra Maudgalya.

 

Vinay Chandra Maudgalya was born in New Delhi in April 2, 1918. He married Padma Devi, and the couple has three children, all of them earned fame and recognition in their own fields. Among the three kids, only Madhup Mudgal chose music as his profession. His second son Mukul Mudgal is a retired Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court who headed the Mudgal Committee. A multifaceted musicologist, Vinay Chandra Maudgalya earned fame as a vocalist. He was a composer and the founder principal of Gandharva Mahavidyalaya in Delhi. He was the founder director of Gandharva Choir and author of many books on Music. He was affectionately addressed by others as Bhai Ji.

 

He became the face of change in society by opening Gandharva Mahavidyalaya way back in 1939, a time when art was not much appreciated, or female artists were not allowed to step out of their families. He put a lot of struggles to place the organization in the cultural map of India. He was one of the greatest teachers of Indian music, who made a great impact on Indian society after founding Gandharva Mahavidyalaya. He was the Director of Saraswati Samaj, and served as the examiner of several Music Universities. Hundreds of his compositions were published in the ‘Prabandh-Shatak - Geet-Manjari’, with a foreword by Professor B. R. Deodhar. As a vocalist, he was a follower of Gwalior Gharana. He passed away in 1995.
