Vikramaditya Biography 
Vikramaditya was a legendary emperor of 1st century BCE who ruled Ujjain. He was the younger brother of Bharthari, the hero of many folk stories of north who renouncing the world and abdicated in the favor of his younger brother Vikramaditya. Vikramaditya too, is still a hot favorite of children and adults through folklore and fairy tales. He is the hero of the popular folk tales - Baital Pachisi, which is still popular among Indian readers. The book consisting of 25 stories was translated as 'Vikram and The Vampire' to English by Sir Richard Francis Burton in 1870.
According to the Pratisarga Parvan of Bhavisya Purana, he was the second son of Ujjain's King Gandharvasena and is portrayed as the first great Hindu King among the ten great kings. There is a There is a tale related to how Vikramidya got the Ujjain empire. His elder brother who was ruler then, once received a fruit of immortality, from the celestial tree of Kalpavriksha and he gave it to his youngest wife whom he loved most. She was in love with the Head police officer Mahipaala and she gave that fruit to him. Mahipaala gave that fruit to one of his maids and the maid returned back it to the king at last. When king understood the infidelity of relationships, he decided to leave the luxurious world and relationships and gave the kingdom to his younger brother Vikramaditya before he announced sanyasa. . His nephew King Gopi Chand of Bengal also accompanied him.
His life is often connected with many fairy tales and folklores and his life history is based on different puranas. He is a popular figure in both Sanskrit and regional languages in India. His story related to Shani is often used to perform Yakshagana in Karanataka. Vetala Panchvimshati which includes a riddle to solve at the end of a story made him a popular Indian hero of fairy tales. Vikram Samvat or Bikram Samwat calendar was started by him.
