Vikas Mahatme Biography 
Vikas Mahatme is an eye surgeon from Mumbai who currently serves as the Founder Medical Director and the leader of TEAM MAHATME. He established Mahatme Eye Bank & Eye Hospital in the year 1987 and it is currently run by SMM Eye welfare charitable trust. He was honoured with the “Padma Shri” award for 2010 by the government of India for his overall contributions to the field of medicine and eye care. He also runs Institute of Science of Happiness – an institution on Personality Development which conducts many workshops of the topic and Pre-primary school for poor children, provided by Mahatme Sanskar Vihar. His organization also works on preventive medicines.
Vikas Mahatme is a doctor based on Mulund and has been associated with the medical field for more than 25 years since 1987. He is the founder director of Mahatme Eye Bank & Eye Hospital, the organization that has conducted over 70,000 eye surgeries till now. His organization has also treated over 1 lakh patients till now. Year back in 1986 he was a jobless doctor, an eye specialist who didn’t have enough money to repay his loans made for buying his equipment. He completed his medical degree in ophthalmology from Nagpur University in 1983. Later he worked as a faculty in Government Medical College in Nagpur until 1985.
It was on a Diwali evening that a significant incident took place in his life. He was sitting in a private clinic with no patients when a couple arrived at the clinic with their single son of 7 years old. His eye was deeply injured by a Diwali cracker and through a surgery Vikas was able to restore the child’s vision. With the fees he got, he was able to pay the 2 month installment dues also. Though he felt happy for a moment, the next moment sadness crept in his mind. He was stuck by the thought, why doctors’ happiness are linked with patients’ sadness and diseases and that’s how he decided to start a non-profitable charity institution on eye care that give importance to preventive measures.
