Vijayashanti Biography

Vijayashanti is an actress and politician from Andhra Pradesh. She has acted around 200 movies including all south Indian languages and Hindi. She has won the National Film Award in Best Actress category for Karthavyam in 1991. She won four Nandi Awards and six Filmfare Awards of South, thus becoming one of the prominent figures of south Indian cinema. Throughout her career she has always experimented with her roles, playing a glamorous girl as well as an IPS officer, a house wife as well as a mythological figure.

 

Vijayashanti was born in Chennai to Varalaxmi and Srinivas Prasad on 24 June 1964. She completed her 10th class at Holly Angeles High School, Chennai and joined film industry. Her debut movie was Kallukkul Eeram, released in the year 1980 as the female protagonist. She debut Telugu industry too, the same year with the movie - Kilaadi Krishnudu. She was given the name Vijayashanti to resemble her name with Vijaya Lalitha, an actress and aunt of Vijaya. Her major break was Neti bharatham released in the year 1983. By 1985, she became one of the top glamorous actresses of Telugu film industry. Films like Muddula Mavayya, Yamudiki Mogudu, Athaku Yamudu Ammayiki Mogudu, Challenge, Muddula Krishnaiah, Desodhdhaarakudu, Pasivadi Pranam, Agni Parvatam, Gang Leader were released during middle 1980’s in which Shanti was casted as a glamour doll. She was paired with top actors of Telugu and her pairing with Chiranjeevi and Balakrishna were noted most. She worked with Chiranjeevi in 19 films and with Balakrishna in 16 films.

 

After the huge success of Mondi Mogudu Penki Pellam in 1992, she reached the peak of her career and she became the only actress of the industry demanding 1 crore rupees as remuneration. She played lead role against Rajinikanth in the Tamil movie, Mannan. The Telugu movie, Karthavyam for which she won National award was dubbed to Tamil as Vijayanthi IPS and to Hindi as Tejaswani. This single movie gave a new image to this ‘glamour’ actress and still regarded as the best movie of her acting career. She is often called, Lady Amitabh after this single movie.
