Vijaya Bhaskara Reddy Biography

Vijaya Bhaskara Reddy served as the 9th Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh two times in 1983 and from 1992 to 1994. He belonged to Indian National Congress. He was elected as the member of Lok Sabha six times, in the years 1922, 1984, 1989, 1991, 1996 and 1998. He served as the Union Cabinet Minister and member of many parliamentary committees. After his defeat in the 1999 elections, he retired from politics.

Vijaya Bhaskara Reddy was born on 16th August 1920 in Amakathadu, Laddagiri Villaga in Kurnool District of Andhra Pradesh. He studied at Besant Theosophical College, Madanapalle and Madras Law College at Madras. He was an agriculturist, lawyer, political and social worker by profession. He married K. Shyamla Reddy and had two sons and three daughters. His son Kotla Surya Prakash Reddy is a member of the parliament representing Kurnool Parliamentary constituency for the second term.

He rose in politics from panchayat to national level. He was first elected as the chairman of the zilla parishad. He held several posts in the congress at state level and national level. In his first term as the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, he was preceded by the B. Venkataram Reddy and was succeeded by Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao and in his second term, he was preceded by N. Janarthana Reddy and was succeeded by N. T. Rama Rao.

He served as the Cabinet Minister in Government of India from 1983 to 1984 and 1991 to 1992. In the first term, he managed the portfolios of Shipping and Transport, Industry and Company Affairs and in his second term, he was in charge of Law, Justice and Company Affairs. He also served as the Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee from 1961 to 1962, Member of Committee on Estimates from 1977 to 1982, Member of Committee on Subordinate Legislation from 1990 to 1991 and Member of Consultative Committee in Ministry of Water Resources from 1990 to 1991.

He died on 27th September 2001 at the age of 81 and after his death, state government erected Kisanghat in his memory.
