Vijay Tendulkar Biography

Vijay Tendulkar was a leading personality of Indian theatre. He was a well known playwright, writer and political journalist. Many real life incidents have inspired him to write plays and his plays Shantata! Court Chalu Aahe (1967), Ghashiram Kotwal (1972), and Sakharam Binder (1972) are regarded as his masterpiece works. He has also written stories and screenplays for movies and television plays. He received Sangeet Natak Academy Fellowship in 1998, highest Indian honour for art. Indian government has also honoured him with Padma Bhushan. He wrote the screenplay for the critically well acclaimed Hindi movie, Manthan for which he won National award. For about 5 decades he has been one of the highly influential theatre personalities of Maharashtra.

 

From early childhood days, he had an inclination to dramas and used to watch them with great interest. He has also participated in Quit India Movement, at the age of 14. He started writing at the age of six and wrote his first play at the age of 11. Yet he didn’t have any intension to make it public. He began his career by writing columns for newspaper. Breaking the vow, in 1956 he wrote Shrimant, which established him as a good writer. Very soon he got attached to Marathi theatre as well, where he became acquainted with many leading theatre artists of that time.

 

Tendulkar wrote the play, Gidhade in 1961, though put it to stage only nine years later. In 1967, he presented on stage, a play written in the year 1956, Shantata! Court chaaloo aahe. During early 1970’s, he became one of the leading theatre personalities of Maharashtra. During this time, he wrote the scripts of movies like Nishant, Manthan, Aakrosh (Filmfare Best Story Award and Filmfare Best Screenplay Award) and Artha satya (Filmfare Best Screenplay Award) which made him an established screenwriter of parallel cinema. He has written eleven movies in Hindi and eight movies in Marathi. During 1990’s, he wrote television plays like SwayamSiddha, acted by his daughter Priya Tendulkar, a noted actress. He lost his son and wife in the year 2001 and daughter, the following year. He died six years later in 2008 after prolonged illness.
