Vijay Prasad Dimri Biography 
Vijay Prasad Dimri, shirtly called V. P. Dimri is an Indian geophysical scientist from Dhimmar, Uttarakhand. He opened a new research area in Earth sciences by establishing a parallelism between deconvolution and inversion, for which he is known most. For his contributions to the fields of science and technology, Government of India honoured him with the fourth highest civilian honour - Padma Shri in 2010. Sir Axford Lecture Award, Basant Samman Award, Lorenz Lecture Award, National Award for Geoscience and Technology, MoES Prof. G. P. Chatterjee Award and FAPCCI Outstanding Scientist Award are some of the honours received by him.
Vijay was born in the year 1948. Dimmar in Chamoli district is his ancestral village. He studied at Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad, and for advanced studies he moved to Germany. He returned back in the early 1970s and started at the National Geophysical Research Institute. He served nearly four decades with the research institute and rose to the position of its director in 2001, a position he held till his retirement in 2010. He also taught at Andhra University, Osmania University and IIT Kharagpur. After retirement he joined Gujarat Energy Research and Management Institute in 2010, and has been serving as its director since then. He is also a member of Scientific Planning and Review committee of the International Council for Science.
His early scientific achievements are related to the mineral and oil and gas explorations. He developed a redesigned Wiener filter, a common equipment used seismic deconvolution procedure. Based on his research works, he published a book titled Deconvolution and Inverse Theory, in 1992. He is credited with the first quantification of gravity interpretation. Dimri formulated two programs, Gas+Hydrates and Legal Continental Shelf while working at National Geophysical Research Institute.
