Vijay Hazare Biography

Vijay Hazare was an Indian cricketer who was one of the earliest captains of Indian test team. He is credited to the first Indian captain who guided India to its first test win. It happened after long 20 years since India made its debut in test cricket, though played only 24 matches till then. Thus he led India to its historic innings win in the 25th international test match in the season 1951-52 at Chennai against England. India won by an innings and eight runs in a match. Vijay has captained Indian team in 14 matches between 1951 and 1953. He was primarily a right-handed batsman for his team, though was an all-rounder who has an outstanding career record in first class cricket.

 

His full name is Vijay Samuel Hazare. He was born in Sangli, Bombay Presidency in the year 1915 as the son of a school teacher. He had 7 siblings. His brother Vivek Hazare has also played first class cricket and siblings have played together too. Vijay had an impressive first class cricket career accumulating 18,740 runs with a batting average of 58.38 in 238 matches he played. His outstanding achievement stands at fourth position in terms of total runs scored by an Indian cricketer. He also took 595 first-class wickets.

 

He owns numerous records in his name. He is the first Indian cricketer to score fifty centuries in his first class career. He is the first Indian batsman to score a triple century in first class cricket and was the first Indian player to score two triple centuries. 316 not out for Maharashtra against Puna is his highest score, followed by 309 for The Rest against The Hindus at Mumbai. Surprisingly the team total was only 387 of which 309 runs belonged to Vijay. Yet his team faced an innings defeat. He recorded a 577 runs partnership with Gul Mahomed in Ranji Trophy at Baroda in 1947 which was the highest partnership for any wicket in first-class cricket. This world record was only broken in 2006 by Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene.
