Vijay Bhatt Biography

Vijay Bhatt was a famous film maker of Bollywood yesterdays who directed movies like Himalay ki gode mein, Goonj udi shehnai, Baiju bawra and Ram rajya. He founded film Production Company, Prakash Pictures, and Prakash Studios in Andheri East, Mumbai, which produced 64 feature films. Vijay Bhatt was one among the founding members of Film and Television Producers Guild of India. His wife was Rama Bhatt and his son and grandson are also leading film makers of Bollywood. His son Parvin Bhatt was a cinematographer and his grandson Vikram Bhatt is a successful film maker of present times. His elder brother, Harsukh Jagneshwar Bhatt was also a producer and director of Bollywood. In 1966, he won best director award for Himalay ki gode mein.

 

Vijay Bhatt was born as Vijayshankar Jagneshwar Bhatt on 12 May 1907 at Palitana, Bhavnagar district, Gujarat. When he was at his 20’s, he moved to Mumbai along with his elder brother. Then his brother Shankarbhai Bhatt joined industry to produce Bollywood movies and young Vijay completed his studies at St. Xavier’s College. With an electrician’s diploma in hand, Bhatt started his career at Bombay Electric Supply & Tramways Company Limited (BEST). He had in his hand a few Gujarati scripts for stage shows.

 

His meeting with Ardeshir Irani, the director of Alam Ara, the first talking movie of Indian screen, was turning point in his career. He introduced Bhatt to the owner of Royal Film Company studio, Abu Husain. Vijay Bhatt entered film industry as a screen writer for silent movie - Vidhi Ka Vidhan. Irani later used two of his scripts - Pani Mein Aag and Ghulam in the year 1929. As a director/producer, Vijay Bhatt debut with Delhi Ka Chhela in 1929.

 

His ‘Ram rajya’ released in the year 1942 was one among his early hits and this movie was shown to Gandhiji too. This movie was shown at Museum of Modern Art, New York on 5 May 1947. In 1953, the classic movie Baiju bawra was released. This movie is regarded as one among the best 10 movies ever made in Bollywood. His other hit movies are Hariyali aur raastha, Goonj udi shehnai, Himalay ki gode mein, Bharat milap and Patrani.
