Vijay Bahuguna Biography

Vijay Bahuguna is the former Chief Minister of Uttarakhand. He is the son of Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna who was a freedom fighter and eminent politician belonging to Indian National Congress. He was also a former Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh. Vijay Bahuguna was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Uttarakhand on 13 March 2012 and resigned the post on 31st January 2014. Bahuguna had submitted his resignation following the widespread criticism for handling rescue operations in the wake of floods in June, 2013. Later Harish Rawat was sworn as Chief Minister on 1st February, 2014.

He was born in Allahabad, UP on 28 February 1947 as the son of celebrated political leader and freedom fighter, Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna. His sister Rita Bahuguna is also a politician who belongs to Indian national Congress and has early served as president of the Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee. Bahuguna completed his graduation in Arts and then LLB from Allahabad University in Allahabad. Then he served as an advocate in the Allahabad High Court in Allahabad and was later promoted to judge. At first he served as judge in Allahabad High Court and at Bombay High Court.

He has been a member of parliament twice, during 14th and 15th Lok Sabha elections. He contested from Tehri Garhwal constituency twice and got elected in the successive terms, 2007 and 2009. He has served as a member of several committees like Committee on Health and Family Welfare, Committee on Ethics, Committee on Offices of Profit and Consultative Committee during his term of 2009 to 2012. He served as the Minister of Power also. From the period 2002 to 2007, he served as Vice-chairman of Planning Commission, Uttarakhand.
