Vidyadhar Vyas Biography

Vidyadhar Vyas is an Indian Hindustani vocalist from Nagpur, Maharashtra who follows Paluskar style of singing. He belongs to the Gwalior gharana. Suneri Maine Nirbalke Balraam is a musical album released by him. He was awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2007 for his contributions towards the field of Hindustani music. He serves as the Executive Director of ITC Sangeet Research Academy, Kolkata since 2007. His professional career as a vocalist began in 1965 and has been associated with singing for more than 5 decades.

 

Vidyadhar Vyas hails from Nagpur, Maharashtra. He was born on 8 September 1944 into a family with music background. He was born as the son of Narayanrao Vyas, a Hindustani musician of Gwalior gharana and a disciple of Vishnu Digambar Paluskar. He cut several 78 rpm discs in khayal, thumris and semi-classical bhajans, and has been a famous musical figure of 1930s. Vidyadhar Vyas followed the musical traditions of his father and learnt khayal, tarana and bhajan gayaki from him. He also holds a Doctorate in Hindustani Classical Vocal Music from the Akhil Bharatiya Gandharva Mahavidyalaya Mandal, Mumbai. He completed his master’s in sociology.

 

His rendition of Khayal makes him a top artist of post-independent era. He has regularly performed for Doordarshan as well as All India radio, and is an A-grade AIR artist. He also owns several cassettes and CDs to his credit. Over the years he has performed in almost all the major festivals in India, and in foreign countries as well. He is regular in writing columns in musical journals, and has also presented many programmes based on Hindustani music and its evolution.
