Vibhuti Narain Rai Biography

Vibhuti Narain Rai is a noted writer in Hindi and English languages known for novels, critics’ and satire works. His published novels are Ghar, Shahar Mein Curfew, Kissa Loktantra, Tabadla and Prem Ki Bhoot Katha. Ek Chhatra Neta Ka Rojnamcha is his noted satire work and Katha Sahitya Ke Sau Baras and "Ranbhumi mein bhasha", his noted criticism works. Combating Communal Conflict and Communal Conflicts: Perception of Police Neutrality during Hindu-Muslim Riots in India are his English works. A few of his works have been translated to other languages. Rai is the founder editor of Vartman Sahitya, a leading Hindi Literary Magazine. He is also an activist who fights against the fundamentalist and obscurantist forces of the country.

Vibhuti Narain Rai was born on 28 November 1951 in UP. He completed post-graduation in English Literature from Allahabad University in the year 1971. He joined Indian Police Service in 1975 in UP. He has worked as Superintendent of Police in many districts.  Currently he serves as Additional Director General of Police in Uttar Pradesh. For his valuable contributions in police service, he has received President’s Police Medal.

Among the 5 novels of this acclaimed Hindi writer, his work Shahar Mein Curfew has been translated to Assamese, Bengali, English, Kannada, Marathi, Punjabi and Urdu. This novel published in the year 1988, was based on the 1980 Hindu-Muslim riot in the city of Allahabad. The book received open criticism and Vishwa Hindu Parishad announced the novel to be anti-Hindu and asked for its ban. His satire work - Ek Chhatra Neta Ka Rojnamcha also earned him a lot of appreciation.

The novel Tabadla was awarded prestigious Indu Sharma Antarrastriya Katha Samman of London. Kissa Loktantra received Uttar Pradesh Hindi Sansthan award. He is a columnist of Hindi Magazines like Vagarth and Anyatha.
