Veturi Sundararama Murthy Biography

Veturi Sundararama Murthy was a Telugu writer, most popular with film songs. He wrote thousands of songs for films and has also appeared in a few movies in cameo roles. In 2007, he received the Jandhyala Memorial Award. He has been conferred an Honorary Doctorate in the 23rd convocation of Acharya Nagarjuna University. He got the National Film Award for Best Lyrics for the song "Ralipoye Puvva" for Telugu movie, Matrudevobhava. He was only the second Telugu lyricist to get this honour. He received filmfare award for the song, Uppongele Godavari in the 2006 movie, Godavari.

 

He has received Nandi awards for best lyricist 7 times. The songs are Maanasa Veenaa Madhu Geetam of Pantulamma (1977), Shankara Nadasarerapara of Shankarabharanam (1979), Brundavani Vundi of kanchana ganga (1984), Ee Duryodhana Dushaasana of Pratighatana (1985), Pavuraniki Panjaraniki of Chandi (1991), Aakaashaana SuuryuDunDaDu of Sundara kanda (1992), Odanu Jaripe of Rajeshwari Kalyanam (1993) and for the last time in 2006 for the title track, Uppongale Godavari of Godavari. He received two Manaswini awards also - Venuvai vachchaanu of Matrudevobhava (1993) and Aakaashaana SuuryuDunDaDu of Sundara kanda (1992).

 

Veturi was born to Telugu Brahmin couple, Chandrasekhar Sastry and Kamalamba in Pedakallepalli. He is the nephew of the Telugu Research Scholar Veturi Prabhakara Sastri and grandson of poet, Veturi Sundara Sastry. After education, he joined Andhra Prabha as a journalist in 1952. He joined a weekly called Andhra Patrika in 1959 where he was in cinema section. Later he became the editor of Andhra Janata. In 1962, he became the only Telugu journalist to interview the then Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru. In 1964, he worked as an assembly reporter and his articles are said to be very catchy and witty. He had a unique power to write on current affairs. He joined film industry while working as a journalist and later became an important part of the industry too.
