Vetri Mahalingam Biography

Vetri Mahalingam is a film director and screenwriter associated with Tamil film industry. He has also handled the roles of lyricist and producer for his film. Till now he has directed three Tamil movies - Arumbu Meesai Kurumbu Paarvai (2011), Vennila Veedu (2014) and Visiri (2018). He served as a producer for his recent release Visiri while served as a lyricist for the previous film, Vennila Veedu, apart from handling director’s role.

His full name is M. Vetri Veeran. Mahalingam began his career as an art director and worked under P. Krishnamoorthy in the 1990s. In the late 1990s, he started his career as an assistant director in Tamil film industry working as an assistant for director Bharathiraja for the film, Taj Mahal in 1999. He continued working under the same director for the next film, Kadal Pookkal in 2001. He started his career as an independent filmmaker only in 2011. His first film was Arumbu Meesai Kurumbu Paarvai,  a low budget project. The movie went unnoticed.

His next film, Vennila Veedu (2014) is the most memorable film of his career up-to-date. Mirchi Senthil and Vijayalakshmi played the lead roles in this family drama. The movie opened to mixed reviews. But the movie was a box office hit. The movie was said to be inspired from real events. Vetri's third film was Visiri (2018) was indeed a unique tale. It narrated the fan rivalry between fans of Tamil actors Ajith Kumar and Vijay. The movie had a low key release amidst big films of big stars and was a box office failure. He marked his debut as a film producer with this movie. Vetri openly criticized film associations for failing to support small budget films.
