Verma Malik Biography

Verma Malik was a popular lyricist of Hindi cinema who was active in the industry during 70’s and 80’s. He was an old freedom fighter also, who fought for India’s freedom. He was a poet also. He has won Filmfare awards for best lyricist multiple times. Those songs for which he was elected winner are – Sabse bada naam of Pehchaan and Title track of Manoj Kumar’s movie, Be-Imaan, Jai bolo Be-Imaan ki. He has been nominated only two times in Filmfare and surprisingly he won it both times as well. Verma Malik has given numerous hit songs during 70’s and 80’s, the era when he was active in writing. ‘Aaj meri yaar ki shadi hai’ is the most popular song of Verma Malik and still sung for many marriage functions of North India.

 

Verma Malik was born in 13 April 1925, Firozpur, British India. At that time British were ruling India and he was an active freedom fighter. He used to write many patriotic songs to boost India’s responses to British rule and those patriotic songs are still popular. Once India partition took place in 1947, he preferred to stay in India itself.

 

He wrote bhajans and patriotic songs before writing lyrics for movies. He used to recite his bhajans as well. It was only in the year 1970 that he started writing for Hindi films. He was introduced to film world by none other than Manoj Kumar, for whom he has written some hit songs. His first big break was from Yadgar in year 1970 film by Manoj Kumar. He noticed by the song 'Ek Tara Bole' pictured on the leading hero of the movie Manoj Kumar. He wrote lyrics for Manoj Kumar’s movie, Be-Imaan also for which he won Filmfare awards.

 

His big hits include – Title song of Aadmi sadak ka, Banwari girdari of Bemisaal, Chalo bhag chalein of Kalyug aur Ramayan, Chankegi payal of Gora, Ek rupaya doge of Sherni, Ghata chaa gayi hai of Warris, Hum to kuch karne aaye of Sitapur ka gita, Id ke din aaj hum ko of Desh ka dushman and Title track of Mera Muquaddar.
