Vembu Vikiraman Biography

Vembu Vikiraman was a prolific Tamil writer and journalist. His real name is Subarayar Vembu, and was simply called Vikiraman too. He lived during the period 19 March 1928 – 1 December 2015. His works include – historic novels, social novels, plays, short story collections, travelogues, children's fiction and a few translation works. Best known as a novelist of historic themes, his novels were categorized under Pallava, Panda and Chola Periods. He also wrote some general social novels. Marakka Mudiyaadhvarkal and Ninaithu Paarkkiren in two volumes are his autobiography works.

He was a recipient of numerous awards and honorary titles including Charitra Kadhai Chemmal', 'Muttamizh Vittagar', 'Pannpattu Kaavalar', 'Sirukadhai Sekkiyaar', ' Kadhai Kalai Chemmal' etc. State government honoured him with Kalaimaamani. He was given an Honorary Doctorate in Tamil Literature by World University. Tamil Nadu State Tamil Development Department Award for 'Chola Elavarasan Kanavu', Raja Sir Annamalai Chettiyaar award by MAC Trust for the novel 'Madhurai Mahudam' etc are awards received by him.

Subarayar Vembu is his real name. He was born on March 19, 1928 to Subarayar and Lashmiammal. His father worked in Southern Railways. Since young, he used to contribute towards handwritten school magazines. Interested in journalism and publications, he started publishing a magazine called Tamil Chudar while studying in high school. Since 1946, he got active in the field of journalism and worked with different journals and magazines. He served as the editor of Amudasurabhi, for over five decades from 1951 to 2003. As a writer he shot to fame through the countless historic novels he wrote. He has tried in different genres of literature and succeeded in almost all. He passed away on 1 December 2015.
