Velu Prabhakaran Biography

Velu Prabhakaran is a successful filmmaker, cinematographer and actor associated with Tamil film industry. 60-year old filmmaker married his co-actor Shirley Das on June 2, 2017. The actress had earlier worked in his film, Kadhal Kathai in 2009. In his films too, the director is known for choosing controversial themes. A choreographer turned film director, atheism and revolutionary subjects remained his top favourites, which he used to frequently highlight in his films. In his films, Kadavul (1997), Sivan (1999) and Puratchikkaaran (2000) he filmed his lead hero as a revolutionary.

This veteran filmmaker started his professional career in the industry as a choreographer in the 1980s. He marked his directorial debut with the 1989 horror film Nalaya Manithan starring Ajay Rathnam, Prabhu, Amala and Jaishankar. He made its sequel, Adhisaya Manithan one year later. These ‘horror’ attempts were followed by Asuran and Rajali, but both failed at box office. He later chose action and revolutionary themes for his films and also achieved limited success.

Kadhal Arangam in 2004 was one of the highlights of his career. His future wife, Shirley Das worked for the first time with him in this movie. In press conference, he gave the credits of the movie as a director to his brother. The movie also invited a lot of controversies for the bold theme, and faced hardships for the approval from censor board. 5 years later the movie received a positive nod from censor board after editing a few sequences. He had to rename his film to Kadhal Kathai. Some of the scenes of the movie were taken from his personal life. The film opened to very negative reviews from critics, who panned it to be a very boring sex flick. Oru Iyakkunarin Kadhal Diary in 2017 is his latest flick.
