Veeravalli S. Varadarajan Biography 
Veeravalli S. Varadarajan is an Indian mathematician at University of California, Los Angeles who has made some immense contributions in the field of quantum mechanics, differential equations, and super symmetry. His contributions to Lie groups and their representations, place his name among the top Indian mathematicians of the 20th century. He was one of the "famous four" in Indian Statistical Institute during 1956-1963, the other three being R. Ranga Rao, K. R. Parthasarathy, and S. R. Srinivasa Varadhan. He introduced Kostant–Parthasarathy–Ranga Rao–Varadarajan determinants along with Bertram Kostant, K. R. Parthasarathy and R. Ranga Rao in 1967. Trombi–Varadarajan theorem in 1972 and the Enright–Varadarajan modules in 1975 are his other major contributions to the field of mathematics.
Veeravalli S. Varadarajan was born in May 1937 in Tamil Nadu, India. He completed his undergraduate degree in 1957 from Presidency College, Chennai. He completed his doctorate in 1960 from the Indian Statistical Institute in Kolkata, under the guidance of C. R. Rao, famous mathematician and statistician. Later he got associated with Institute for Advanced Study and the University of Washington, Seattle for a brief period, before he finally joined the Department of Mathematics at UCLA in 1965.
Veeravalli S. Varadarajan’s primary interest was in the field of probability, and later he moved to representation theory and finally to super symmetry. Trombi–Varadarajan theorem, Enright–Varadarajan modules and Kostant–Parthasarathy–Ranga Rao–Varadarajan determinants are among his major contributions in the 1960s-1970s. He was awarded with the Onsager Medal in 1998, and many other international honours related to the field of mathematics. He was one among the mathematicians who were recognized by American Mathematical Society in 2012.
