Ved Rahi Biography

Ved Rahi is an Indian film director and novelist, who has directed a few television shows too. He is best known for authoring non-fiction works, and owns several short stories and novels to his credit. He has published 7 novels, 3 collections of short stories and 2 anthologies of poetry in Dogri language. He has published several poetry works in Hindi and Urdu language. Lal Ded is famous novel written in Dogri language.

In 1983 he won Sahitya Academy award for his Dogri novel, Aale. He also made the film Veer Savarkar (2001), a bio-epic on Vinayak Damodar Savarkar. He is a well-known name in literary circles as well as in Television and Film Industry all over India, and best known for his contributions towards Dogri language. “Gul Gulshan Gulfam” – his TV serial for Doordarshan is still reckoned among one of the best works for television Industry.

Ved Rahi was born in Jammu on 22 May 1933. His father, Lala Mulk Raj Saraf was a journalist and publisher who started the first ever newspaper in the princely state of Jammu and Kashmir in the year 1924. As he was brought up in a literal environment he too picked up writings since young. He started writing in Urdu language, followed by Hindi and Dogri languages. Later he concentrated most on less-known Dogri language and published many novels and poems in this language.

He worked in film and television industry as well. He scripted and wrote dialogues for more than 25 Bollywood films, and directed 5 of them. His TV serial “Gul Gulshan Gulfam” created new benchmark for TV shows on Indian television. Known to be a soft person, he remained far away from controversies throughout his professional career. He has been honoured with Maha Pandit Rahul Sankritayayan award in 2011 and Lifetime Achievement Award by Government of Jammu and Kashmir in 2012.
