Ved Prakash Kamboj Biography

Ved Prakash Kamboj is an Indian scientist in the field of medicine, specialized in Reproductive Biology, Fertility Regulation and Endocrinology. He is the president of the National Science Academy of India (NSAI) and ex-director of CDRI and CSIR Emeritus Scientist, Central Drug Research Institute (CDRI). He has also served as the Chairman of Review Committee on Genetic Manupulation (RCGM) in 2007, Biotech Consortium India Limited (BCIL) Proteomics in 2003 and INSA Honorary Scientist 2006. He became Fellow of the Indian National Science Academy in the year 1989 and has been Administrative Member, Indian National Science Academy (INSA) Council in 4 terms during 1990’s and 2000’s. Ranbaxy Research award 1992 in Medical Sciences and Vigyan Gaurav Samman by CST are the major awards received by him. He has authored/co-authored more than 300 research papers on medicine which have appeared in many Indian and foreign journals.

 

Ved Prakash was born in Jullundur, Punjab on April 1st, 1937. His primary education was done at Jullundur itself. He completed graduation in 1959, M.Sc. (Honors) in 1960, Ph. D in 1965 and D.Sc. in 1970, all from Punjab University. Then he took advanced training in Reproductive Biology and Contraceptive Technology in 1975 in Germany. Kamboj joined the Division of Endocrinology in CDRI, Lucknow soon after his graduation as a research scientist. Later he became the Head of the Department of Endocrinology and served the position till 1981. In 1981, he became the Deputy Director, Division of Endocrinology of the Central Drug Research Institute and in 1992, got promoted as the director of the institute.

 

From 1997 till 2008, he was the President of National Academy of Sciences, Allahabad. His contributions also include in the form of over 300 research papers and a few books including - Chemistry and Biology of Herbal Medicine. He has also contributed in the development of a non-steroidal once-a-week contraceptive pill, ormeloxifene.
