Vayalar Ramavarma Biography

Vayalar Ramavarma was a very popular poet and lyricist of Malayalam. His combination with music director Devarajan has given numerous classic hits to Malayalam cinema and majority of those songs belong to K.J.Yesudas too. In 1961, he has won Kerala Sahitya Academy Awards for Sargasangeetham (poetry collection). His famous works include Sargasangeetham, Mulankaadu, Padamudrakal, Aayisha, Oru Judas janikkunnu. In his memory, Vayalar award is being given to writers for their contributions to Malayalam poetry world and is given on October 27 every year.

His popular song, Manushyan mathangale srishtichu of the movie Achanum Baapayum, sung by Yesudas has given him National awards in the year 1973. Vayalar Ramavarma has won Kerala state awards for best lyrics multiple times and he was the first person to win this award. Those movies include – Nadi and Kadalpalam (1969), Chakravarthini of Chemparathi (1972), Nellu and Athithi (1974) and Chuvanna Sandhyakal, Swami Ayyappan (1975). He died at a younger age of 47 when he was at the peak of his career, thus leaving a void that was never filled again. Vayalar always remains as the true legend of Malayalam lyrics writing category and all the writers of today see Vayalar as their inspiration and role model. His son, Vayalar Sharth Chandra varma is also writing lyrics for Malayalam movies now.

Vayalar Ramavarma was born in Vayalar of Alapuzha District, Kerala as the son of Vellarappally Kerala Varma and Vayalar Raghavaparambil Ambalika Thamburatty. Vayalar belonged to an aristocratic Brahmin family but became a poet by revolutionary ideals. Vayalar has written about 2000 songs for 223 Malayalam movies and for several plays. He mostly wrote songs for the drama group, KPCC and those songs were as popular as film songs during that time, when people used to watch stage shows and dramas a lot.
