Vatsyayana Biography

Vatsyayana was a Hindu philosopher in the Vedic tradition who is believed to have lived around 3rd century CE in India. He is the author of the celebrated work worldwide – Kamasutra. Nyaya Sutra Bhashya, the first commentary on Gotama's Nyaya Sutras is next noted work. Nyaya Sutras is a work on philosophy written by Buddha in 2nd century BC. His interest in human sexual behavior as a medium of attaining spirituality was recorded in his treatise Kama Sutra. Kamasutra is one of the earliest authenticated works on erotic science globally and hence the name of this philosopher holds a special space in studies related to human sex. As per historians, he was less of a groundbreaking philosopher and apparently more of a diligent academician.

There is little knowledge about this sage.  For years, scholars believed that he lived sometime between the 6th century B.C. and the 6th century A.D. – The Gupta period of Indian civilization. His work Kama Sutra reveals that he spent most of his time in Banaras (present Varanasi) as a religious student. It’s believed that he spent several years studying religion before compiling his work. Kama sutra was written about 300 years later Shastra was written. While Kama Sutra gives different ways to tackle kama (or sensual pleasures), Nyaya Sutras gives alternative paths to attain spiritual liberty from the repeated cycle of births and deaths.

He is believed to be the creator of goddess Tara for hill tribes as a tantric goddess. With the wide spread of worship to the east Garo hills, a 'yoni' goddess Kamakhya was created. In his work he concludes that one who preserves his Dharma, artha and kama, is sure to obtain the mastery over his senses.
