Vasanthabalan is a native of Virudhunagar. He started off as an assistant director of Shankar. When Kadal became a huge hit, he wrote the script of Veyil and thought it as an experimental film, similar to Kadal. Though he decided to cast Kadal Sandhya for the role of innocent girl, later Bhavana was roped for that role. He showed the script to Shankar while he was busy with Anniyan in 2005. Yet Shankar assured that he will listen to the story if it has something different and should not be a typical commercial movie. Shankar heard the story, got impressed by it and then financed the movie – Veyil.
